Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis isn’t known for pulling any punches when it comes to dealing with liberal ideology, and his take on critical race theory is no exception. The Florida Republicans as taken matters into his own hands dealing with the venomous teaching that is sweeping the nation.
While many politicians would come up with a way to push back, even more, would say that they’d do something but never actually follow through. DeSantis, however, is playing games and he has found a way to put his money where his mouth is on the issue of CRT and teachings going to the children in the Florida Public School system.
On Tuesday of this week DeSantis signed a bill that would not only fend off CRT, but required that schools teach kids about the evils of communism and its ideological principles. DeSantis announced the new measure at a press conference at Three Oaks Middle School in Fort Myers, Florida, according to The Daily Caller.
The governor’s new orders cover teachings that were addressed in three brand new education bills that were created for the express purpose of fostering civic literacy in school-aged children and making them more aware of what methods of government have been tried, and which have failed (miserably, in most cases).
“It’s crucial to ensure that we teach our students how to be responsible citizens,” DeSantis said during the press conference. “They need to have a good working knowledge of American history, American government and the principles that underline our Constitution and Bill of Rights.”
According to The Daily Caller’s assessment of the new laws, Florida’s HB 5 adds requirements to high school curriculum that is funded by the state government, stating that students in that crucial period be taught the “evils of communism and totalitarian ideologies.”
“We have a number of people in Florida, particularly southern Florida, who’ve escaped totalitarian regimes, who’ve escaped communist dictatorships to be able t of which is for students to learn about ‘real patriots’ who came to America after fleeing communist and socialist regimes,” DeSantis explained while announcing the bill.
The second bill signed into law was SB 1108 which applies to state colleges and universities that receive government funding. It mandates that students take a civic literacy course and a civic literacy assessment as a graduation requirement.
The third and final bill, HB 233, requires colleges and universities to intentionally conduct annual assessments on the “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” at their institutions.
“It used to be thought that a university campus was a place you’d be exposed to a lot of different ideas,” DeSantis said. “Unfortunately now, the norm is really that these are more intellectually oppressive environments. You ho come to America.
“We want all students to understand the difference, why would somebody flee across shark-infested waters, say leaving from Cuba to come to southern Florida. Why would somebody leave a place like Vietnam? Why would people leave these countries and risk their life to be able to come here, It’s important students understand that” DeSantis said.
DeSantis is being lauded as a hero for his efforts, and they’re not to be understated. However, it’s also sad that someone saying “kids should learn to love America” is out of the ordinary. It’s a frustrating day for many when it has to be mandated that social studies include telling the truth about socialism, communism and other historically damaging ideologies that so many Americans died to keep off our shores.
DeSantis did the right thing. The question is, how many more times will we require the DeSantis’ of the world to stand up for a people unwilling to stand up for themselves?
