World Environment Day, a globally recognized event dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues is just around the corner. On June 5th, people from all walks of life will come together to celebrate the beauty and significance of our planet. Whether you’re a tree hugger or appreciate the great outdoors, this is an occasion to mark on your calendar. And this year, the UN has announced that Côte d’Ivoire will be hosting the celebrations.

Understanding the objective of World Environment Day should be the first step towards participating in this global tradition. Several issues influence the environment, but the one that is discussed most frequently is climate change. Below are the top, pressing environmental issues facing our generation.

Climate Change

Climate change is the most critical issue facing our generation and has arguably been the liberals’ number one environmental concern for decades. The most celebrated scientific body in the world, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), characterizes the changes that the planet is undergoing as perceptibly human-induced and undoubtedly alarming. World environment day creates an opening to discuss the importance of protecting and preserving our environment and discussing measures that can be taken to improve the condition.

Plastic Pollution

Plastic is an inescapable part of modern life — used to wrap food, package products like electronics and cosmetics, or create durable accessories such as shopping bags. As a result, plastic pollution has become ubiquitous worldwide and poses a particular threat to marine animals. Creating eco-friendly solutions to the problem of plastic pollution is, therefore, a necessity and should be a priority of World Environment Day.

Plastic pollution is also the theme for 2023, and the campaign is #BeatPlasticPollution.

Forests

World environment day is dedicated to discussing the need to preserve our forest ecosystems. Forests play an intricate role in reducing climate change, regulating water cycles, sequestering carbon in the soil, and protecting biodiversity. The same ecosystem that provides us with food, clean drinking water, and oxygen also helps to safeguard us from natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding.

World Environment Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the challenges we face and the impact of our actions on the planet. It’s a chance to educate ourselves, take responsibility, and make positive changes in our daily lives.

So, whether you’re a self-proclaimed eco-warrior or appreciate clean air and beautiful landscapes, let’s come together on June 5th to celebrate World Environment Day. Protecting our environment isn’t a political issue – it’s a matter of survival for future generations. Remember, Mother Earth doesn’t care about your political leanings. Let’s put our differences aside and give our planet the respect and love it deserves. Happy World Environment Day!
