Protected No More: DOJ Admits Hunter Received Money to Influence U.S. Policy

Hunter Biden appears to have lost his cover after his father, President Joe Biden, was booted from the Democratic presidential ticket. In a turn of events that will leave CNN speechless, Special Counsel David Weiss’s team said they will show evidence in court that Hunter Biden got money from a Romanian businessman who wanted to change U.S. policies and stop a local investigation in Romania.

The special counsel’s team plans to focus even more on Biden’s business activities. They will show evidence in court about his deals with the Ukrainian company Burisma and the Chinese company CEFC China Energy.

New documents say that a wealthy Romanian paid Biden to change U.S. policies and public opinion when his father was vice president.

The evidence doesn’t show that Biden did lobbying work for this money. Instead, it indicates that Biden did little work for the millions of dollars he received.

The prosecution shared these details to convince the court not to let Hunter Biden’s attorneys exclude evidence they think is unfair in his tax case. Biden is accused of not paying taxes, not filing taxes, avoiding an assessment, and filing false forms. Hunter says he’s not guilty of these charges.

Prosecutors said that from November 2015 to May 2017, Biden received about one-third of $3.1 million as part of a verbal deal to help Gabriel Popoviciu fight bribery charges in Romania. Popoviciu wanted U.S. government agencies to look into the bribery investigation he was facing. He hoped the scrutiny would resolve his legal battle.

They also mentioned that a business associate will testify in court. This associate will say that the Romanian businessman hired Biden to persuade U.S. federal agencies to stop the investigation in Romania.

Prosecutors won’t show evidence that Biden got money from a foreign government or was paid for his father’s political actions. However, they believe details about how Biden was paid and what he did are important to the case.

They will also show that what Biden agreed to do for Popoviciu shows his mindset at the time.

Even though Biden was dealing with drug addiction, it doesn’t mean he was incapable of understanding his actions. The evidence shows that he acted with clear intent. He secretly agreed to try to influence U.S. policy, receiving millions of dollars for this work.

Hunter and his partner were aware that this lobbying could cause political problems for Joe Biden, so they set up the deal to keep the actual work hidden. Hunter Biden’s business partner and Popoviciu claim that payments were for “management services for real estate in Romania.” But prosecutors say that’s not what Popoviciu was paying for.

Weiss said Hunter Biden’s lawyers asked the court to drop the claims that he broke the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA.

In court papers, Hunter Biden’s lawyers said that he had been politically targeted with conspiracy theories about his foreign business work. They pointed out that he has never been charged with any crimes related to these baseless claims. They say Special Counsel should not be allowed to discuss them in the trial.

Weiss mentioned that the government does not plan to discuss these FARA claims or say that Hunter Biden wrongly worked with the Obama Administration. However, they will show that Hunter’s business partner set up their business to avoid registering as a foreign agent and that Hunter and his partners did contact government officials, including the U.S. Department of State.

The DOJ’s sudden willingness to throw Hunter under the bus is puzzling. Democrats and the DOJ have long denied Hunter’s involvement in shady business dealings, hoping to protect his father. Now that Biden is out, it seems the DOJ is willing to pursue allegations first made by the House Oversight Committee in 2023.

The timing is suspicious. Was Joe Biden removed from the ticket because the evidence linking him to his son’s corruption can no longer be hidden? Or is Hunter on his own after Democrats abandoned his father?

Hunter remains an inconvenient problem for Democrats before the November election. One thing is sure—things are getting uncomfortably real for the Bidens.
