President Trump didn’t mince words when asked about the left-wing uproar over actress Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad. His response? Pure Trump. “She’s a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad!” he quipped to reporters before boarding Marine One on Sunday.
What was all the fuss about? Sweeney, an actress known for both her Hollywood appeal and down-to-earth charm, appeared in a jeans commercial wearing form-fitting pants and a half-buttoned shirt. Harmless? Not according to the left. They claimed the ad was “white supremacist” and even accused it of being “eugenics propaganda.”
Trump, taking it all in stride, said, “You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that.” He added, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!”
Records show Sweeney registered as a Republican in Monroe County, Florida, in June 2024. But the backlash had already hit full steam long before her political leanings came to light. Why? Because, to many on the left, Sweeney represents everything they love to hate: she’s attractive, confident, and embraces traditional American aesthetics.
That’s not all. She restores classic cars in her spare time and doesn’t pander to woke Hollywood narratives. In other words, she’s not supposed to exist in the left’s cultural universe—and certainly not be popular.
Vice President JD Vance didn’t let the moment pass, either. Appearing on the “Ruthless” Variety Progrum podcast, he delivered a deadpan jab: “My political advice to the Democrats is to continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive [they are] a Nazi — that appears to be their actual strategy.”
Vance continued, saying the controversy shows how out of touch Democrats have become. “You have a normal, all-American, beautiful girl doing a normal jeans ad to sell jeans to kids in America, and they have managed to so unhinge themselves over this thing.”
American Eagle, to its credit, didn’t back down. In a firm statement, the company said, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.” The brand emphasized its commitment to letting individuals express themselves, adding, “Great jeans look good on everyone.”
The backlash hasn’t slowed Sweeney’s popularity. If anything, it’s cemented her as a cultural lightning rod—proof that simply being beautiful, successful, and politically independent is enough to trigger the modern left. That’s especially true if you dare to smile while doing it.
What started as a typical ad campaign became a full-on culture war moment. But instead of backing down, both Sweeney and her defenders leaned in. And thanks to Trump’s classic response, the left’s overreaction looks even more absurd.
As Vance summed it up, “They’ve managed to so unhinge themselves over this thing.” At this point, no one’s surprised. But conservatives aren’t backing down, either—especially when the left picks a fight over denim.
