We know very little about Doug Emhoff. We know even less about Ella Emhoff…

Her ‘Momala’ Kamala Harris is hogging the limelight now that President Joe Biden has pulled a dramatic exit from the presidential race. But for Ella Emhoff, life carries on as usual. Picture this: the 25-year-old tattooed stepdaughter of the presumptive Democratic nominee, casually dragging on a cigarette while walking her dog, Jerry, in hipster Brooklyn. Her Secret Service entourage is in tow, sticking out like a sore thumb.

Ella is not your average stepchild. She has graced runways, attended the Met Gala, and modeled for major brands—all with the Secret Service in tow. Yes, taxpayers, that dashing man awkwardly lurking behind Ella on the Met Gala red carpet isn’t her stylist or a misplaced wedding guest—he’s there on your dime, ensuring the safety of the VP’s quirky stepdaughter. So, when you see Ella draped in Stella McCartney, commanding the red carpet, just remember that her salt-and-pepper-haired protector is trying, and failing, to blend in with the glitz and glamour.

Ella’s rise to fashion fame began at the 2021 inauguration, where her bedazzled Miu Miu coat and custom Batsheva dress set the internet ablaze. Suddenly, she was signed by IMG Models, catapulting her from Parsons School of Design graduate to runway regular. But let’s be real. Would she be strutting the catwalks of Maisie Wilen and Proenza Schouler if her stepmom wasn’t the Vice President of the United States? I mean, come on.

Her security detail is a constant reminder of the absurdity. From her funky knitwear pop-ups in New York to the Paris Fashion Week runways, they’re always there, lurking in the background—a taxpayer-funded shadow. It’s almost poetic, in a dystopian sort of way—fashion meets politics, protected by the very citizens whose opinions are as divided as the latest runway collections.

In Ella’s defense, when a 2021 clip of JD Vance (now Trump’s running mate) resurfaced, in which he called Harris one of the “childless cat ladies” who “want to make the rest of the country miserable too,” Ella responded, “How can you be ‘childless’ when you have cutie pie kids like Cole and me?” She also added that she loves her three parents.

Now, the critics are out for blood—or maybe just some ironic humor—about exactly who Ella is.
